Welcome to Elm’s class page!
We hope you enjoy looking at some of the things that our wonderful class get up to.
Days to remember things:
- Monday - Spelling test
- Wednesday - Homework due in
- Thursday - PE kit needed
- Friday - PE kit needed and reading record check
We started the year with a unit on Number and Place Value, where we have been learning how to read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10.000.000. The children have coped extremely well with this and have been able to apply what they have learned to answer reasoning and problem solving questions. Following that, we moved on to recapping the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), where we have had to apply our knowledge to a range of problems and different contexts. After the half term holiday, our maths sessions have mostly been based on fractions. We began by looking at comparing and ordering fractions and have now moved on to adding and subtracting fractions, which will be followed by multiplying and dividing fractions.
We have also enjoyed taking part in active maths sessions. Here we are practising formal written methods of division and ordering fractions.
TT Rock Star’s day
We have been trying hard to improve our recall of times table facts and had a fantastic rock star day on 07.11.18, where we all dressed as rock stars and practised our times tables through a variety of fun times table games and activities. Here we are during our day.
In English, we have been learning the skills of the year 6 curriculum through our study of the novel ‘Wonder’ by R J Palacio.
In order to make our writing the very best that it can be, we have been looking at different text types in detail in order to identify their purpose, audience and key layout and structural features, as well as Writing Key Skills that have been used to make the writing effective, so that these can be included in our own compositions. Here we are on a scavenger hunt for the key features of non-chronological reports.
We have been working hard at improving our reading skills during English and Guided Reading lessons. We had a great time playing ‘Quick on the Draw’, racing against other teams to improve our pace in retrieving information from the text.
We have also been improving our speaking and listening skills, in order to help us with our writing. We enjoyed taking part in a class debate about whether or not children should be allowed to be educated at home. This formed the basis for us writing a balanced argument based on the same subject. Here we are during our debate.
Please come into our classroom to have a look at some of the fantastic work that we produce during our writing sessions.
During topic sessions, we have been learning about the Americas. We have learnt how to use atlases to locate different countries within both North and South America, as well as their capital cities. In History, we have been learning about the Maya Civilisation. We have found out lots of facts about the ancient civilisation and really enjoyed completing a research based homework task into an area of the Mayan Civilisation that interested us. Take a look at some of wonderful homework pieces.
On 23.10.18, all the children in year 6 went to Cadbury’s World for the day to learn more about the Mayan Civilisation, with a particular focus on chocolate! We had a fabulous day, learnt lots and ate lots of chocolate! Here are some of our highlights of our day.
