Welcome to the Birch Class Page!

Hello, my name is Miss Shenton and I am the Year 6 teacher in Birch Class. I am Maths Lead and one of the staff governors at Glapton Academy. I am really looking forward to supporting your child to learn, grow and become the best versions of themselves this year.

During History today (17.11.21), we had a visit from a member of the local community to talk to us about her experiences of WWII.

During the war, Lily lived in Merseyside, Liverpool, which was one of the areas most affected (due to being near the docks) by air raids. Lily was ten at the time and her and her two younger siblings were evacuated to Wales in order to try and keep them safe. We took part in a question and answer session, whereby we were able to ask about her experiences of being an evacuee, how she felt at the time and how the war affected her and her family.

Today we visited the National Justice Museum and learned all about British law and justice systems – past and present!

We began our day in a civil courtroom. We each had a role to play as we acted out a real-life court case – presenting cases, questioning witnesses, improvising, and deciding on the final verdict.

Our afternoon was spent experiencing Medieval and Victorian prisons; exploring dark cells and dungeons; learning about prison reform in the Victorian era; discovering punishment methods from the Middle Ages; coming face-to-face with some interesting characters from these time periods and much, much more!

Take a look at some snapshots from our day…
